Shoud I choose a G router or a N router?

G router is the older technology. N routers are essentially just G routers on steroid. N routers is a new technology that has stronger signal, faster speed, and better direct transfer rate. This makes it ideal for high definition streaming content, watching videos, playing game online, as well as downloading large files.

Where should I position my wireless router?

For best performance, we should position our router:

  1. in the center of the house
  2. away from other electronic equipment such as TV
  3. high off the ground, probably near but not too close to the ceiling
  4. away from walls if possible
  5. Move cordless phones and their base stations away from the wireless router. A small distance can make a big difference. Move a foot away at first and increase up to a few feet to see if it makes a difference.

See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IAuJByi-HBY and you should try different locations to determine the best location.

What are some open-source firmware for your wireless router?

How to connect two wireless routers together?

Previously, I used DSL, but then switched to using cable modem. For awhile, the cable modem wireless router seems to be stable. Since then, I've added a few wireless devices (one iPhone, one Macbook Pro, a few Windows desktops and laptops, and a few Linux desktops and laptops as well), and the cable modem wireless router seems to have a problem with this. I am able to get on the Internet with some devices, and at the same time, the network connection on the other devices are sporadically dropped. On the device that was having network connection problem, I can work around this problem by turning off the wifi connection and then turn it back on. This works most of the time. When this does not work, I have to reboot the wireless router. The same problem also happen at my mom's house. This is quite annoying. Lets see if I can somehow combine my DSL wireless router with my cable modem wireless router together to eliminate this problem.

In the below procedure, the primary wireless router is the cable modem wireless router, the one that actually connect to the ISP, and the secondary wireless router is my old DSL wireless router.

  1. On the primary wireless router:
    1. Reserve an IP address for the secondary router
  2. On the secondary wireless router:
    1. Change its default IP address to the IP address reserved from the above step
    2. Disable DHCP
    3. Click on the WAN tab, and change the default Connection Type from PPPoA to Bridge and select the Enable DHCP transparent transmission
  1. On the secondary wireless router:
    1. Upgrade the firmware
    2. Create the username and password for accessing this router
    3. Click on the Setup tab, and under Basic Setup, choose Automatic for the Connection Type and enable STP, and assign this secondary wireless router a private static IP and click on Apply Settings
    4. Click on the Security tab and disable any firewall or security settings.
    5. Click on the Wireless tab and set the wireless mode to Repeater, set the network mode to Mixed, set the SSID to the name of the connection that you want to repeat, and set configuration to Bridge
  • Reposition the wireless router
  • Replace the antenna on the wireless router with a better antenna, or somehow extend the range of the antenna on the wireless router by following the links under the "simple tricks" section. Take an old TV antenna and connect it to the antenna on the wireless router.
  • Change the wireless router to use a different wireless channel

How can we update firmware if the vendor no longer support it?

If your vendor is no longer upgrading their equipment's firmware, you may want to upgrade to an alternative firmware. These tend to give you better performance and far more control of your Wi-Fi AP.

The best of the open-router firmwares, in order from hardest to easiest to deploy, are DD-WRT, OpenWRT, and Tomato. While I can't recommend even Tomato for a novice, experienced power-users with some network savvy won't have any trouble with these.
