How can we convert video to text?

  1. Go to youtube.com/upload and upload your video file. If you have an MP3 audio file, you may use a tool like Windows Movie Maker, iMovie on Mac or FFMpeg to convert the audio into a video file before uploading to YouTube.
  2. Wait for YouTube to completely process the video. The machine transcriptions may not immediately become available after uploading the video.
  3. Open the YouTube video page in Chrome and look for the CC button in the player. If it exists, the transcribed audio can be downloaded as text.
  4. Press F12 on Windows, or Option+Cmd+J on Mac, to open the JavaScript console inside Chrome Developer tools and paste this code:
if(yt.config_.TTS_URL.length) window.location.href=yt.config_.TTS_URL+"&kind=asr&fmt=srv1&lang=en"

It will open the transcribed text of the uploaded video in the current browser tab as shown in this short video. Save the file with a .html extension and double-click to view the transcription in plain text.

The same trick can help you download the closed captions of any video on YouTube even if you are not the uploader. And you can replace “en” in the URL with “fr” or “es” to download the transcriptions in another language.

Another method:

  1. Open Google Doc using Chrome
  2. Click on the New button to create a new empty Google Document
  3. Click on Tools -> Voice typing
  4. Click on the Click to speak button (or the microphone icon that is displayed)
  5. Click on the Allow button
  6. Open another tab and start playing the video that you want to transcribe.

Another method is to play back the video on your computer but use your phone to do the transcribe:

  1. Open up a word processing or a note-taking application on your smartphone
  2. Press the microphone icon on the keyboard within the application on your smartphone to select voice input
  3. Position the smartphone close to your computer
  4. Play the video on your computer

On my Macbook Pro, how do I use QuickTime to edit video?

  1. Open your video. In QuickTime Player 10, click File > Open File. Click Desktop on the left, then select your video and click Open. Your clip will appear with a set of controls towards the bottom. Let’s start by trimming off either end of the clip. Select Edit > Trim. A yellow bar appears at the bottom.
  2. Trim your clip. Drag the left-hand end of the yellow bar to the right to trim the start of the clip, and pull the other end to the left to cut off the end. As you work, click the Play button on the far left to play back the clip as it will be once you’ve trimmed it. Adjust the yellow bar to suit.
  3. Add more footage. When you’ve got it just right, click Trim and the yellow bar will disappear. If that’s all you want to do, skip to step 7 to save and share your video. But let’s add a second clip to the video. Select Edit > Add Clip to End. Find the video on your Mac and click Choose media.
  4. Rearrange things. Your original clip is the section on the left, and the one you’ve just added is to the right. If this is the order you’d like them in, click Done. But if you’d rather the second clip play first, drag it to the left, and the original one will shift right. When you’re happy, click Done.
  5. More advanced edits. Once you’ve added multiple clips, you can rearrange, trim and split them using View > Show Clips option. To trim a given clip, double-click it and follow the instructions in steps 2 and 3. To add footage to the middle of a clip, click it once to make a thin yellow line appear around it.
  6. Split clips. Press Play and wait for the red time marker to arrive at the point where you’d like to add more footage, then click Pause. Drag the marker to position it more precisely if you wish. Then go to Edit > Split Clip. You can split clips into multiple pieces and rearrange as you please.
  7. Export your video. With your video perfected, click Done. Now it’s time to save a copy. Choose File > Export. Give it a name, choose where to save it, and pick a format. For most purposes, it’s best to leave the setting on iPad, iPhone 4 & Apple TV, if available. Click Export to save your video.
