Give your child a little reward (a feeling of accomplishment) for finishing each page:
- Let him put a sticker in the corner.
- Let him color the pictures or lesson number at the top of each page.
- Let your child autograph the page when it is finished.
Put the progress chart (in the back of the book) onto your refrigerator. After finishing a lesson, the child can add stickers, stars, or his signature to it.
Do each lesson on the the computer, and then work with the book.
Build confidence.
Fun Games:
- Find all items in the house that start with letter A - have him spell it.
- Your child may enjoy playing the token game. In this game, the child earns a token (a penny, a sticker) for each word done correctly, and loses a token for each word done wrong.
- You may also read the story to the child (immediately after he has read it), and make deliberate mistakes while reading (such as changing the word sat to swim, or dog to dinosaur). Your child will have great fun correcting you.
Make a spreadsheet (schedule) using day of the week as header. Each column contains sounds that we will be teaching for that day. Each day, we will review sound that was taught on the previous day, review the sound that was taught on the same day of previous week, and we will teach the new sound. Each week, we will teach at least one story (may be we should teach one story per day), and the story should cover sound that was taught previously. Students should identify (circle) sound that was taught that day. We should ask each student to pick out a book to read in front of the class.
Have a database of funny stories. Teacher can search for story using sound.
Ask the school to see if we can have a video tape
